The first glimpse, which was released on Thursday (Oct. 11), takes viewers on a tour through the desert overlooking the city of Agrabah. As day turns to night, we see a silhouette of Aladdin as he enters a forbidden cave to retrieve jewels and a sacred lamp. The one-minute clip ends just as Aladdin extends his hands to grab the golden lamp.
Mena Massoud stars in the picture as Aladdin. Power Rangers’ Naomi Scott will reportedly play Jasmine. Will Smith has signed on as the Genie. The actor previously teased his role with a movie poster on Instagram on Oct. 10. “Can’t wait for y’all to see Me BLUE,” he wrote in the caption. Marwan Kenzari, Billy Magnussen, and New Girl’s Nasim Pedrad will also appear in the film.
Aladdin will round out a string of live-action movies from Disney. Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast were previously released in 2015, 2016, 2017 respectively. Next up, Dumbo will debut in theaters in March 2019, followed by The Lion King in July 2019. The latter will star Childish Gambino as Simba, Beyonce as Nala, and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa.
Aladdin opens on May 24, 2019.
