Aquaman presents a different world under the sea filled with high flying stunts, glassy jelly fish, and baby sharks that take flight. Amid the mix of sea creatures, the film’s new trailer gives glimpses of Aquaman—Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa) journey from childhood protégé to a full-blown attempt at becoming the king of the sea.
Directed by James Wan, the film has a star-studded cast with the likes of Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, and Temuera Morrison, among others. The premise is centered around Arthur’s battle with his half-brother Orm who’s also trying to become king.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan said the brother’s relationship boils down to something very simple.
“The main antagonist in this movie is Orm, played by Patrick Wilson,” Wan explained. “And Black Manta, played by Yahya [Abdul-Mateen], is caught up in that world with them as well. But the main drive really is, it’s almost a very classic Shakespearean story about a brother from another world vs. brother from another world. And it really is a classic story of sibling rivalry.”
Additionally, Wan also discussed how Aquaman isn’t your typical superhero movie because it highlights a different type of battle with nature. It’s more than just fighting a creature or a villain.
“We’re used to superhero movies where the threat is from another dimension or aliens from another universe coming here and trying to destroy our Earth,” Wan added “But we haven’t seen one where the main threat is from a massive, massive civilization that is right under our nose, in the ocean.… The idea that there could be a massive civilization living right underneath [us] that we don’t know about is kind of scary and exciting.”
Aquaman dives into theaters Dec. 21. Watch the latest trailer above.
