The Oprah Winfrey Network may have another breakout hit on its roster. Fresh off its highest debut rating with Greenleaf on Tuesday (June 21), OWN has released the trailer for filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar. The Selma director’s first TV series, featuring a crop of fresh faces, is set to air this fall.
The show, based on Natalie Baszile’s novel Queen Sugar, will follow the lives of two sisters Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley) and Charley Bordelon-West (Dawn-Lyen Gardener) who, along with Charley’s teenage son Micah (Nicholas L. Ashe), move to Louisiana after inheriting an 800-acre sugarcane farm from their deceased father.
“From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” DuVernay said last year after landing the opportunity. “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.”
