Ava DuVernay is adapting another book into a visual work of art. The Emmy award-winning filmmaker is slated to develop a television series based on Tui T. Sutherland’s Wings of Fire fantasy novels, according to Netflix‘s announcement on Tuesday (April 20.) This will be her first animated series by way of her content company, ARRAY Filmworks, and in partnership with Warner Bros. Animation. The final project will consist of 10, 40-minute episodes.
“Within this epic book series from the mind of Tui Sutherland is an elegant saga filled with wisdom and wonder, exploring ideas of belonging and bias, camaraderie and community,” said DuVernay in the official press release. “On behalf of my colleagues Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes of ARRAY Filmworks, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix and Warner Bros. Animation for this dynamic adaptation where five young dragonets fulfill their destiny and show viewers how to fulfill their own.”
Sutherland added: “I am so immensely thrilled and grateful that Ava DuVernay is our Queen of Dragons (I’m pretty sure that’s the official title). Ava is someone who saves the world every day without waiting for any prophecy to tell her what to do. I hope some of my dragons grow up to be just like her!”
The New York Times bestselling book follows five prophesized “Dragonets of destiny” – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – as they “embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end” in their world of Pyrrhia.
DuVernay’s first book adaptation film was 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time, starring Oprah Winfrey, Storm Reid, and Mindy Kaling. In February 2020, it was revealed that DuVernay would be teaming up with Amazon for the adaption of Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 sci-fi book, Dawn. And last October, it was reported that she will be adding her directorial magic to the adaption of the non-fiction, New York Times bestseller Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.
As for Wings of Fire, no official release date has been announced.
