The show will find Gerald “Slink” Johnson (best known as Franklin from Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V) as Black Jesus, the son of God living in present day Compton, California. His mission is to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden disciples.
McGruder, who created the series, will serve as executive producer through his 5 Mutts Productions along with writer/director Mike Clattenberg (Trailer Park Boys) and LEG’s Norman Aladjem and John Bravakis. The series pickup comes hot on the heels of the “true race” of Jesus controversy triggered by Fox News analyst Megyn Kelley, whom recently lit up the world with her “Jesus is White” commentary.
Black Jesus will also star Charlie Murphy (Are We There Yet), Corey Holcomb (Wild ‘N Out), and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks) as the Lamb’s neighborhood followers. Production on the series has already begun in Los Angeles for a premiere later this year.
Now, if only we can get that Season Four of The Boondocks already.
