The Black Panther actor surprised Shaw with the touching act as he accepted the award Monday (June 18). “Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes we have in real life,” he said.
“If you don’t know James Shaw Jr., he fought off a gunman in Antioch, Tennessee, at a Waffle House. He saved lives. Come on up here,” Boseman said as Shaw also received a standing ovation from the crowd. “This is gonna live at your house.”

In April, Shaw apprehended a gunman who opened fire in a Waffle House. In addition to saving lives, Shaw used his notoriety to raise money for the victims’ families. He’s also continued to fight for gun reform with numerous charities.
His good deeds have also been commended by the likes of Pharrell, who brought him out during his set at the Rolling Loud Festival in May.
