Ever since the nominees were announced for the 2016 Oscars, talk of diversity, and the lack their of, has been at the forefront of the Hollywood conversation. Once it was announced funnyman Chris Rock would host, many called for the seasoned comedian to step down to show solidarity with the many actors of color who were snubbed this Oscar season. Rock, never one to back down from a challenge, stayed the course but made sure to call out the Academy for their wrongdoing.
During his opening monologue the-51-year-old actor pulled no punches going as far as to call the 88th annual Academy Awards the ‘White People’s Choice Awards” and said had hosts been nominated, he would’ve lost the coveted position to How I Met Your Mother alum Neil Patrick Harris.
Yet when it came time to explain why he didn’t boycott the ceremony, Chris Rock kept his answer simple and plain.
Opportunity. That’s it, that’s really all it is.
