Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has the support of funnyman W. Kamau Bell…that is when it comes to science. The politically minded host of the acclaimed FX series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, a show executive produced by Chris Rock, has filmed a tongue-and-cheek video for Actually.org.
“I think Mitt might be on to something big here,” Bell ponders in the public service clip, which takes on Romney’s past mocking of climate change. “He’s the only candidate willing to boldly stand up and say what I felt for so many years: FUCK YOU Science!”
Bell tells VIBE that getting involved with the Actually.org spot—a collaboration between American Bridge 21st Century and the Jewish Council for Education and Research, which in the past has produced headline-making videos featuring such notables as Sarah Silverman and Rosie Perez—was a no brainer.
“Once I found out they were the people behind Sara Silverman’s The Great Schelp video I was like, ‘Whatever you need me to do let’s do this now,’” Bell says. “These people know what they are doing. They find a really good way to mix comedy and a message, which I always try to do.”
In The F*ck Science clip, Bell adds, “Ever since I was a kid and had to cut up frogs, I’ve always thought science was bullshit. What do you have against frogs, science?” From there the funnyman gives Romney a pat on the back for telling the “truth” that global warming isn’t caused by gas emissions and gave a nod to Romney’s balling lifestyle. “Science says having seven cars in a sweet ass car elevator is unsustainable,” Bell jokes. “Science, I say your haterism is unsustainable.”
For Bell, using humor to dissect the heated campaign between President Barack Obama and Romney is always fun. “I do think the video promotes a good message and it gets people to think about climate change, which is sort of a boring and dull topic,” he says.
But when it comes to politicians, and Romney specifically, he believes they should leave the laughs to the professionals. “In America everything is a reality show, even running for President,” Bell muses. “So now Obama and Romney have to tell jokes on national TV. Not only are we judging their debate performances now we are judging their stand-up comedy performances.”
Bell continues: “Obama pulled it off. But Romney has revealed himself. He can read a good line but he still seems to be disconnected and not enjoying the process. One of the things we need from our President is we want the person to be in control and having a good time in being in control.”—Keith Murphy (@murphdogg29)
