There will be another “Death in the Family,” according to Batman, Incorporated writer Grant Morrison.
DC Comics announced on Monday that Damian Wayne, the Dark Knight’s current sidekick and son, will die in Wednesday’s (2/27) latest issue. The offspring of Bruce Wayne and Talia al-Ghul has been the role of Robin since 2006 (at the old age of ten), and is the fifth person to go by that alter-ego.
Writer Grant Morrison introduced the comic world to the concept that Bruce had a son he never knew in the Batman comic books. In a statement, Morrison said, “This master theme of damaged and ruined families was nowhere more in evidence than in the creation of Damian, the first ‘Son of Batman’ to be acknowledged in the canon. In many ways this has been Damian’s story as much as it has been the story of Bruce Wayne and it’s a story that had its end planned a long time ago — for what son could ever hope to replace a father like Batman, who never dies?”
While Damian won’t be the first Robin to die at the hands of (** SPOILER ALERT **) The Joker, Morrison considers this story to be the finale of a years-long Bat-epic in which he explored nearly every aspect of the character.
What do you think? Should Bats’ son have to perish by crowbar? How do you think he’ll meet his untimely (albeit laughable) end? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
