Ryan Coogler’s Creed had a more than stellar bout at the box office during its release in November 2015. Now, it looks like the film is preparing for another knockout performance.
According to Variety, the movie, which stars Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Sylvester Stallone, will be released in November 2017 through the MGM entity. A circulating plot entails traveling back to the days of Rocky, which will include the return of Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers. In an interview with Variety, Stallone said, “Ryan has some ideas going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together. Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”
Within that same interview, Stallone also revealed that Coogler might take the title of executive producer, and not herald as the visionary behind the lens due to his rumored venture as director of Marvel’s Black Panther and the conflicting scheduling of the suspected sequel for Creed. “I know Ryan is going to be gone for a couple of years. There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel,” Stallone said.
In VIBE’s November cover story featuring Michael B. Jordan, the Newark native also spoke on the possibility of a follow-up reel. “It’s a story that people want to see more of, and a character that people want to see what happens next,” he said. “There might be a Creed 2. I think people would dig it.”
Creed has since grossed over $105 million stateside and has been nominated for a bevy of awards ahead of accolade season this year.
