
As the music industry mourns the loss of icon Davie Bowie, many of hip-hop’s most influential have all voiced their appreciation and expressed their condolences for the 69-year-old who lost his 18-month battle with cancer.
The TODAY show, while honoring the late rock star, dug up a 1993 interview with Braynt Gumbel. During the sit-down, Bowie, then 47, promoted his album Black Tie, White Noise and spoke of creatives desire to express, be heard and understood.
Gumbel then switched gears to ask Bowie about his appreciation for rap music to which he credited rappers with being “truly creative.”
“The quality and significance of the social message has moved very much to the black and Hispanic market, Bowie said. “And that’s where the new force of music is coming from. With black music, there’s a very strong social point to make. There’s a means of discovery and a purpose.”
