The 18th annual Tribeca Film Festival has taken special care this year to feature diverse filmmakers and films. One of the most anticipated, Devil’s Pie, takes an intimate look into D’Angelo, often referred to as one of music’s most talented, yet troubled singer-songwriters.
Borrowing its name from the singer’s beloved Voodoo album, the Carine Bijlsma directed film is comprised of archival, as well as behind the scenes footage of D’Angelo as he gears up for his return to the stage in promotion for his Grammy-award winning Black Messiah.
The Root’s Questlove, Alan “Pops” Leeds” along with D’Angelo’s Vanguard band members are all featured in the 85-minute documentary, reveling in the Virginia native’s genius. “D’angelo’s feel is second to none. He sounds like an entire band on the piano, ” a band member said.
