It doesn’t matter what you roody-poo’s think, The Rock has finally come back to the small screen!
Dwayne Johnson is joining the pay cable network, as the half-hour pilot Ballers was picked up by HBO. The series marks his first major series gig on television and will find him executive producing alongside his Pain & Gain co-star Mark Wahlberg.
The script, written by Entourage screenwriter Steve Levinson, finds Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, a retired professional football player. Ballers explores the lives of a group of former and current pro football players. The cast also includes Omar Benson Miller (8 Mile, Get Rich or Die Tryin’), John David Washington (Malcolm X), Rob Corddry, Jazmyn Simon and Donovan Carter.
The former WWE Heavyweight Champion is quickly reinforcing the fact that he’s the go-to-guy for all things action. The half-hour dramedy will start production later this year, and will follow another half-hour project starring Jack Black and Tim Robbins (The Brink). Up next for The Rock is his reprisal of Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious 7 movie, whose production has been delayed by the death of star Paul Walker, and his starring role as Hercules in Brett Ratner’s Hercules.
