Fans of Eddie Murphy can prepare to see more of his outrageous hijinks in their Netflix queue. According to Deadline, the Academy-Award nominee and famed comedian is in negotiations to star in Soul Soul Soul: The Murray Murray Story, a fake documentary that will star the famed comedian. Produced by Brian Grazer and Tyler Mitchell, the fake documentary will reportedly be helmed by X-Men director Brett Ratner and written by Chris Case.
Murphy will portray Murray Murray, a soul singer from the 1960s who attempts to dismantle the hip-hop genre when a popular artist samples one of his songs. A self-proclaimed legend, Murray reconvenes his old band together in a bid to recapture his former glory.
Luckily, if Murphy’s looking for inspiration for his character, he won’t have to look that far. For fans in dire need of a pop culture refresher, you’d recall that the Coming To America star portrayed Jimmy “Thunder” Early, a cocaine-snorting ’60s soul singer in the movie Dreamgirls. Rendered in the vein of late greats like James Brown and Jackie Wilson, the character showcased Murphy’s dramatic acting chops, earning him an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor.
