Known as the ‘High Priestess of Soul’ Nina Simone went onto become one of music’s greatest performers and one of the Civil Right’s movements most robust and outspoken activists.
But the life of the classically trained pianist was often marred with bouts of depression and Bipolar Syndrome. In an Netflix original documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone chronicles the life, love and pain of the artist born Eunice Kathleen Waymon. With commentary from Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, her ex- husband Andrew Stroud and her musical director and guitarist of 42 years Al Shackman.
In the two-minute trailer directed by Academy Award nominee Liz Garbus, viewers will see never-before archived footage of Simone as well as her deal with her demons, with Simone’s own music acting as the film’s soundtrack.
The documentary is set to air June 26. Watch the trailer up top.
