There’s no story that Denzel Washington can’t lift off the ground.
For the red carpet premiere of his latest film Flight, VIBETV spoke to writer John Gatins whose past struggle with addiction and discomfort with flying inspired the plot and Denzel’s role.
“I fly a lot for work and I think I started writing this movie when I was 30 or 31, I didn’t have any kids,” he says. I just think it’s a really dramatic, great character, the idea of the guy that you give all your control to when you get on an airplane. You want to think that this guy has his life perfectly in line and it was the rider moment of ‘what if he doesn’t?’
Garcelle Beauvais (“The Jamie Foxx Show”) also stars in the film and believes the movie captures a human element that gives daily interactions perspective. “I just think it gives a human light to pilots and people we totally trust, you know, truck drivers, cars, bus, anybody and you put your trust in their hands but you never know what they’re going through.”
Flight soars into theatres Nov. 2. Check out more footage from the premiere below.
