As the second season of Freeform’s Grown-ish continues to progress, the hit show has already received the go-ahead for season three. According to Variety, the series (starring Yara Shahidi, Chloe x Halle, Trevor Jackson, Luka Sabbat, Deon Cole, Emily Arlook, Francia Raisa, and Jordan Buhat) sits at the top spot for a cable comedy show viewed by women ages 18-34.
Freeform’s president Tom Ascheim noted that the show also depicts what it looks like to allow young people the space to sharpen their power. “At Freeform, our shows are uncompromising and bullish on what’s possible when young adults are empowered to be themselves and share their voice about the things that define them and their generation,” Ascheim said.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Shahidi discussed her vision for transferring one idea of her character from Kenya Barris’ Black-ish — which Grown-ish is a spinoff of — to another idea of what the persona could be in relation to viewers her age.
“I’ve been Zoey Johnson for four, going on five years and to be able to see her grow so rapidly and create a new show has been so much fun,” Shahidi said. “Kenya is the ultimate collaborator and so awesome to work for and with. As somebody who cares about Zoey’s story, it’s been such a beautiful time to figure out who she is, and who she is in relation to this fabulous cast of people that we have. I just love my cast. We have a group chat going and it’s fantastic and we miss each other when we’re not around each other and that’s just a cool moment to have.”
