The network confirmed Thursday that the upcoming fifth season of the acclaimed Terry Winter series will be its last.
“It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers,” said Michael Lombardo, HBO programming president. “Terry Winter has created one for the ages.”
Having a relationship with HBO dating back to his time writing for The Sopranos is courting Oscar buzz for his work writing the screenplay behind The Wolf of Wall Street. The decision to end the Steve Buscemi-starring series is based on the direction of the series, which consistently ranks high behind fellow shows True Blood and Game of Thrones as the network’s most watched programs.
It has scored more wins than any other scripted television program, which would give people cause to believe there shouldn’t be a cancellation of the show.
Boardwalk Empire returns to television screens for the last time in the fall.
