
Genndy Tartakovsky’s misadventures with Dracula and co. scored a decent $43 million gross to earn the #1 spot at the box office.
The animated antics of Hotel Transylvania caps off a great week all round for Sony, which was also distributing Rian Johnson’s brain-twitching sci-fi thriller Looper. Billed as a “labor of love” for the studio, expectations for “Transylvania” was in the $30 million range. “To have that kind of opening really gives you an idea of just how broadly the film is playing. And in September? I mean, come on!” Sony worldwide distribution topper Rory Bruer exclaimed.
Meanwhile, the Joseph Gordon-Levitt / Bruce Willis action pic launched into second place with $21.2 million, pushing End Of Watch down to third with $8 million. Clint Eastwood-starring baseball drama Trouble With The Curve was knocked down to fourth place, earning $7.5 million dollars, while the horror picture House At The End Of The Street was at the bottom of the top five, earning $7.1 million.
