Issa Rae first burst onto the scene when she perfectly encapsulated those “off” moments black women sometimes experience with her runaway YouTube hit, Awkward Black Girl. After building a following, writing a bestselling book, and enduring her fair share of set backs along the way, on Thursday (June 23) HBO finally released the trailer for her comedy series, Insecure.
The eight-episode show kicks off this fall and follows Rae’s character as she juggles her job at an outreach program. Rae must deal with her mostly white co-workers, along with her majority black students who crack jokes on everything from her attire to why she speaks like a “white girl.”
When Rae isn’t at work, she’s spending time with her boyfriend (played by Jay Ellis from BET’s The Game) who appears to be another added stress to her life. While she swears she’s going to drop him, her homegirl knows better. With Missy Elliott’s “WTF (Where They From)” as the music bed for the 50 second trailer, Insecure proves to be a confident debut from our girl, Issa.
