Jaden Smith took a lengthy hiatus from the film industry to star in a number of high fashion campaigns. But he’s returning to a smaller screen in the forthcoming Netflix original series, The Get Down, alongside Dope‘s Shameik Moore on August 12.
The series, which was first announced in February 2015 by the streaming network in partnership with Sony Pictures, will chronicle the coming of age story of a crew of African-American and Latino boys growing up in the South Bronx during the controversial time of the 1970s. Shameik will play main character, Shaolin Fantastic, an eccentric, thrill-seeking kid who often roams the dangerous streets of New York City. Jaden has been cast as the recurring character, Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, a psychedelically-talented graffiti artist, nurtured by the hard streets of the Bronx.
According to reports, the streaming series will be split into two separate parts for its first season. The first six episodes will premiere on August 12, and the remaining six episodes will show some time in 2017. Music and production will be headed by Nas.
