The Prisoners star is in talks to headline the boxing drama, Southpaw, which Antoine Fuqua is directing for the Weinstein Company. Rap god, Marshall “Eminem” Mathers was originally attached to play the lead, but it seems that he has dropped out.
The Kurt Sutter-written drama tells the story of a disgraced title-winning fighter (Gyllenhaal) who tries to rehabilitate his image for the sake of his daughter. DreamWorks was originally slated to distribute, but when they tapped out, MGM picked up the tab and will ship out through Sony.
Southpaw is expected to start production next year.
Gyllenhaal was really impressive alongside Hugh Jackman in Prisoners and he’s currently filming the journo-drama Nightcrawler, which should keep fans on the edge of their seat.
