Michaela Coel, the talented and hilarious mind behind Chewing Gum, has been on the lips of many lately since the release of her show’s second season last week. While the writer/actress has found fans in celebs like Idris Elba, Stormzy and Insecure’s Issa Rae, the 29-year-old has found a major admirer in Rae’s co-star, Jay Ellis.
The actor declared his love for Coel and her hit Netflix show via Issa’s Instagram. While filming season two of the HBO series on Saturday (April 8), the actress shared Ellis’ special message for the UK star. “I need you to know how much I’m in love with you right now,” he said. “I just want you to know I need you in my life somehow, someway because I stayed up until 3 am watching Chewing Gum and Im in love with you. That’s all I gotta say.”

It’s pretty easy to fall for Coel. The quick-witted funny woman pulls out the stops in Chewing Gum, a story about Tracey (played by Coel) who goes through leaps and hilarious bounds to lose her virginity. In between her shenanigans feature odes to 2000’s R&B jams and poignant observations on religion and race. “I mean, it’s quite mad actually,” Coel tells VIBE on the success of her show. “It’s quite mad how people seem to get the show the way I wanted them to get it. I get messages from people that break down the show to me, and I’m like, ‘You get the show as if you wrote it,’ and that’s amazing. It’s been really cool.”
Just last week, Coel flaunted her new hairstyle on the red carpet of the 2017 Olivier Awards. In a dress designed by her mom, the actress let out a few jokes while sharing her slayage on Instagram. “I will let you know when my finances back up the lifestyle that these pictures are conveying,” she said. “I will let you know with no shame. For now – I’ll see you on the train.”
