Fans and viewers could barely catch their breath while watching Sunday night’s (June 26) 2016 BET Awards. The breathtaking opening performance with Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar set the tone for a night of high energy and unforgettable surprises.
And while paying homage to Prince and his musical legacy was top priority at last night’s award show, it was Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams who left an indelible mark on the evening with his soul-stirring acceptance speech.
The 33-year-old actor received the night’s humanitarian award for his activism and efforts in the fight for civil rights. Wearing all black, Williams took to the stage to deliver a politically charged speech that brought attendees to their feet. Thanking the many organizers who spend countless hours putting together marches, as well as the women of the movement who often go unrecognized, Williams thanked them and also honored slain victims such as Eric Garner, Rekia Boyd and Tamir Rice who’s 14th birthday was the day before.
