Actor Johnny Depp has had a difficult time getting back on his feet after a career-rattling Rolling Stone feature interview this past June. Due to the issues the City Of Lies would have in terms of trying to generate buzz and publicity with Depp as the star, Global Road Entertainment decided to pull the film just one month before it was scheduled to hit theaters.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that in the film, “Depp stars as disgraced LAPD Detective Russell Poole, whose biggest case — the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. — remains unsolved. Forest Whitaker also stars in the movie, which was produced by Miriam Segal’s Good Films.”
The Rolling Stone profile was the least of Depp’s worries; a City Of Lies crew member sued him for allegedly punching him twice on set. In July, he settled a $25 million fraud case against his former managers, which would have examined how he blew his fortune. He also recently made an eyebrow-raising appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to plug his upcoming film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
“In spite of fans voicing their concerns online about his presence in the movie after allegations of physically abusive behavior involving ex-wife Amber Heard emerged, the actor received applause and cheers from the Hall H crowd,” says THR.
