LeBron James’s new television project couldn’t have a better name. The NBA star is set to executive produce Shut Up and Dribble, a three-part documentary series that will air on Showtime, the cable network announced Monday (Aug. 6).
The series draws its title from Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s exact comments about James after he dared to address racism and politics in an ESPN interview, in February. Ingraham also used “shut up and dribble” as a response to James, and Golden State Warriors player Kevin Durant’s criticism of President Donald Trump.
Showtime’s docu-series will offer a “powerful look inside the changing role of athletes within the fraught culture and political environment through the lens of the NBA,” Deadline reports. Ingram’s comments will be used as a launching pad for the series.
James and his business partner, Maverick Carter, are producing the series under their SpringHill Productions imprint, along with Gotham Chopra, the director behind Kobe Bryant’s Oscar-winning 2016 documentary, Dear Basketball. Gotham is also the son of Deepak Chopra.
The docu-series is one of several SpringHill projects in the works, including a Madame C.J. Walker Netflix series, and White Dave, a single camera-comedy about a black teen from a suburban white neighborhood who moves to an all-black neighborhood when his mother gets remarried.
Shut Up and Dribble is scheduled to air on Showtime in October, the same month that James will make his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers.
