To be honest, it’s not like Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V needed much promotion. Hip-Hop had been salivating at the mouth waiting for the album and when it finally hit streaming platforms last Friday, (Sept. 28) fans devoured all 23 tracks shortly after pressing play.
Wayne did, however, do his part to push the album, already projected to mount the Billboard 200, along. Monday night (Oct. 2) the 36-year-old sat with Jimmy Fallon to discuss, albeit in generalities, what delayed the highly-anticipated project.
“It was business, you know,” Wayne said. “Kind of over my head at times and I’m a real musician. A real artist…But when I say I’m an artist meaning I’m so into what I’m doing every day, meaning my craft, when I have to go too far into something else I put somebody else in charge of it. When somebody else that was in charge of it messes up then everything blows up. That’s all. Everything blew up and we just needed the debris to clear and Tha Carter V.”
Tunechi said in the four years fans have been waiting for the album’s release he’s spent time with his children or skateboarding, which he credits to helping him clear his mind. “If you thinking about something else while you’re on that board, it’s ‘gon show you.” Wayne quipped.
But it wasn’t all long talk. Wayne, while wearing a red Christian Dior T-shirt and a fanny pack performed “Dedicate” with house band The Roots to a packed an eager audience.
