In 1995, women gathered their girlfriends to hit the movie theaters and watch one of film’s most revered reels. Waiting To Exhale, which is based on a novel penned by Terry McMillan, made viewers laugh and cry with its relatable storyline that followed the lives of four best friends and how they handled love and heartbreak.
Directed by famed actor Forest Whitaker, the movie stars Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, Loretta Devine and the late Whitney Houston. The soundtrack was equally a hit, racking up Grammy Awards for the movie’s lead melody “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” sang by Houston, and listed singing credits from Mary J. Blige, Brandy, TLC, SWV and more.
Twenty years later, talks of producing a sequel to the iconic movie is still bubbling in the boardroom. Actress Loretta Devine, who played Gloria Matthews in the film, hinted at the possibility that our dreams of seeing a follow-up might come true.
“They’re still writing on it, for all we know… Everything happened so quick because Gregory passed and then Whitney passed and it’s like you can’t start a movie with two funerals and they were like the key characters and so everything just sort of got scattered after that but I think Terry McMillan is still trying to make it happen,” Devine said during an interview with Hollywood Today Live.
That’s all the updates we have for now, but keep your eyes peeled for further details later on this year.
