Due to arrive in theaters this November, Jeff Nichols’ Loving takes a look at Richard and Mildred Loving and their interracial affair in 1960’s Virginia. The official trailer gives fans an emotional sneak peek into what life was like for the young couple who in their own world simply wanted to be together, but from the outside were breaking laws both on the books and unspoken.
Played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, the film received rave reviews when screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Nichols, while speaking with Deadline, said he wasn’t interested in taking a political angle, but focused more so on the humanity of their story, and undying love for one another.
“I think when you’re talking about marriage equality and race, people very quickly start to get into their political corners. Their ideology comes to the forefront and they get into this platform argument that they’re used to making, which really doesn’t have anything to do with the day-to-day basics of what is being talked about. The Lovings are the day-to-day.”
The couple spent a decade in the public eye as their case made its way to the Supreme Court, eventually winning the fight to legalize interracial marriages in the United States. Watch the trailer for Loving below.
