Monica isn’t the same woman she was a few years back. During a clip for the Season Three opener of The Real, the R&B singer made it clear the old Monica would’ve had some choice words for fellow songstress Brandy following her reaction to being asked to enter the #SoFarGone challenge. But this new Monica has children who look to her and can’t ask her kids to do something she can’t do herself.
Monica surprised a fan on the show also participating in the challenge, and when Loni Love asked how she felt about Brandy’s dismissive reaction to a fan wanting her to participate, Monica kept it cool.
“I’ll tell you, I’m not bothered at all,” the 35-year-old said. “Honestly, the old me and the new me are two different things, and this journey of self- progression and self- love and empowerment that I’m on, I can’t go backwards. I think that, that was just a test from God for me and I’ve always thought that she was one of the most legendary people and, has one of the most amazing voices in the runs and riffs. And I just think that it’s, some of it, has been blown out of proportion to a degree, but I can’t tell my kids to do something that I can’t do. So it was just a test for me to, uh, always just take the high road and know that in anything that happens in this life, if it’s meant for you, it’s yours. Nobody can stop it or stand in the way of it.”
Monica’s #SoFarGone challenge has quickly taken over the Internet with many fans and celebrities all trying their hand. However, when Brandy was asked to throw her hat in the ring, she replied with “Child bye,” which prompted many to believe their was bad blood between the two singers.
Monica however isn’t entertaining any of the foolery and said she would even collaborate with Brandy in the future.
“I would work with her again. It’s never been an easy situation, but the reason that I would do it, is because we are from a special elite group. It was her, Aaliyah and myself. And it was a very special time where each of us were individuals, we did our own thing and we all made our own mark. And the truth and reality is the only Grammy either of us has is together. So that to me says something special. So yeah, I absolutely would.”
Just like FLOTUS said, when they go low, we go high. C’mon, Monica.
