Here’s something you probably don’t see every day. The film industry is getting another piece of the the black narrative, with Moonlight, a movie depicting a coming-of-age story, which will explore being black and queer.
The film, which is based on the original play, “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue”,” by Tarell Alvin McCraney, is set in 1980s Miami and follows the life of Chiron (played by Trevante Rhodes) as he searches to find himself during three, defining periods in his life. Along his journey, Chiron is forced to come to terms with his sexuality and faith.
The official trailer for the film shows short clips or memories from Chiron’s past, present, and future. Janelle Monae, and Luke Cage’s Mahershala Ali are also featured in the trailer. “A film about moments that define us, the people who shape us & the ache of love that can last a lifetime,” A24 Studios posted on the film’s official Twitter account.
The film is slated to be released on October 21, 2016, with world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival a couple weeks in advance. Check out the trailer for Moonlight below.
