Netflix is opening their 2018 with plenty of content to share, like the upcoming stepping-comedy Step Sisters.
The trailer for the film dropped Tuesday (Jan. 2). Directed by Drumline’s Charles Stone III, the movie follows Jamilah (Megalyn Echikunwoke), a successful college student and member of a popular faux Divine Nine sorority. Jamilah’s dreams of making it to Harvard for law school are at her fingertips–the only thing she has to do is teach a group of white soros how to step for charity event.
Jamilah finds herself teaching the importance of sisterhood to the girls, but also in limbo with her soro sister Aisha (Naturi Naughton). The film bares comparisons to cleaner dance films like Stomp The Yard and the cult classic, Bring It On. Critics are also calling out the film for it’s predictable black-white jokes and accusations of culture appropriation.
Shadow and Act reports the film was intended for a theatrical release for March, but landed in the hands of the streaming service due to production issues. Other folks involved in the production of the film include Dear White People’s Chuck Hayward and The Chi creator Lena Waithe.
A poster carrying the phrase, “Stomp It Like It’s Hot’ was also released.
The film will hit the streaming service Jan. 19. Check out the trailer above.
