The gaming world rejoiced at OUYA’s major achievement, as the crowdfunded gaming console is now available at retail stores across North America, Canada and the United Kingdom.
After a slight delay from the June 4th date it promised earlier, the good news is that the retail console is in stores today (June 25). Gamers will be able to have the console, controller, an HDMI cable and batteries for $100 ($99 to be exact). Extra controllers run $49.99, but with apps for the Android and iOS available, you can use your mobile device or tablet as an extra gaming tool.
Already sold out at Amazon.com, other stores such as Best Buy, GameStop, Target or GAME will carry the device. “It’s incredible to think that a little under a year ago OUYA was just an idea — we wanted to do something completely new in console gaming: build a $99 game console, with no discs to buy, open to all developers, and affordable to all gamers,” Julie Uhrman, CEO and co-founder, OUYA said. “Today, OUYA is real. Console gaming has never needed something new more than it does now.”
The sleek 3″ x 3″ cube is made of brushed aluminum, the OUYA features and open operating system with custom interface built on an NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset that delivers fast performance, amazing graphics, and surround sound in 1080p HD. The controller, which is designed specifically for OUYA, is similar to an Xbox 360 build; features all the button combinations; includes two analog sticks, a D-Pad, eight action buttons, a system button, touchpad, and Bluetooth connectivity.
For those wondering about what titles will be available upon purchase, there will be 170+ games ready for download on the system with an ever-growing game library included as incentive for purchase. Titles such as Final Fantasy III, Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Beast Boxing, Saturday Morning RPG will all be free-to-try and you won’t have to use a disc to enjoy your game. OUYA gamers can also use Twitch, iHeartRadio and many other video and music apps to stream their favorite online content.
We were able to get hands-on with the device the other day, so stay tuned to our review of the OUYA coming soon!
