As promised, Nicki Minaj is gearing up to release a new documentary in support of her latest album release, Queen. The rapper recently dropped a teaser for the upcoming film on Instagram on Tuesday (Oct. 2), and the snippet gets pretty heavy.
In what appears to be nearly two minutes long, Nicki opens up aboutt he extreme emotional and physical pain she experienced throughout her life. In particular, she opens up about her experience in violent, romantic relationships.
In the first clip, she recalls instances in which she stepped in front of her mother in order to prevent her father from physically abusing her. “As a little girl, I would stand in front of my mother,” she said, demonstrating how she used to protect her mom. “That’s why people would describe be as abrasive or bitchy because I vowed from that age, no man would ever abuse me, call me out my name, and abuse me like that… And then all of a sudden, that was my life.”
Nicki went on to detail her own abusive relationship, which led her question her identity. “Who was I going to inspire when I had nothing in me to give,” she continued. “I let one human being make me so low, that I didn’t even remember who I was. I was scared to get in the studio. I didn’t believe in myself.”
Fortunately, the rapper was able to break free from that dark period in her life. She noted that it was when she moved to Miami and then New York again that she was able to gain creative freedom that eventually led to producing songs like “Good Form” and “Coco Chanel,” which were featured on her Queen album.
It is unclear who the “Barbie Dreams” artist is referring two in the documentary teaser. Undoubtedly, this has been a crazy time for Minaj. The artist has constantly been in the headlines, whether it’s connection to her rumored romances, her beef with other female artists, or controversy surrounding her album and career.
Hopefully the Queen documentary will bring some clarity for fans. The doc does not have a release date at this time. Check out both clips here.
