In just 30 days, Ouya, an inexpensive gaming console that runs on Android, has raised $8,596,475 in crowd funds.
Ouya’s Kickstarter campaign was created to help fund the development of an open platform and succeeded, as 63,416 backers raised the money needed to make the project a reality. CEO Julie Uhrman posted, just hours before Ouya’s campaign ended, “We’ve been blown away the whole time.” The project first went live on Kickstarter’s site in early July and quickly began attracting game enthusiasts who pledged money to help bring the project from prototype stages into production. Those who kicked in $95 or more are slated to receive one of the consoles when they are ready to ship next March.
A number of high-profile partners have come on-board to pledge content to the Ouya, such as Namco Bandai and Square Enix, which will bring Final Fantasy 3 to the console at launch.
