Variety reports the allegations played a part in the series cancellation, which premiered on the OWN network in June.
The lawsuit, which was filed in November, the actress named Dixon Brenner, said she was “physically and sexually abusive relationship” by The Game producer 10 years ago.
Akil was accused of smacking, beating, and forcing the actress to perform sexual acts on him. Some of the allegations are disturbing, including one incident where Akil allegedly forced the woman to drink his urine.
The show was based on the early relationship between Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil and Salim. The series was given the green light for a second season in July 2018 and pre-production commenced shortly after.
Despite the cancellation, the show had high ratings, garnering up to a million viewers on several episodes. It also earned favorable reviews from critics.
