Paramount has set a release date for the next Friday the 13th movie, which will find Pamela Voorhees’ beloved son slashing teenage campers on Friday, March 13th, 2015.
No other details have yet been revealed about the film, including a writer or director, but ShockTillYouDrop notes Platinum Dunes, who produced the 2009 remake, will again produce the picture.
That film was a notable success, which made it a surprise when a sequel failed to quickly materialize. There were some complicated issues involving the rights of the film, but Paramount is now a part of the film, committed, as a co-producer, since they held rights on the original film.
In an “only in Hollywood” scenario, Paramount got the full rights to make and release the next Friday the 13th movie on their own (along with a new South Park movie) as part of the deal that brought Warner Bros. in as a partner on Christopher Nolan’s next blockbuster film, Intersellar.
Paramount only has the rights to Jason Voorhees for the next five years, which can explain why they’re in a rush to get it out to the public. What’s still unclear is the storyline of this upcoming film or how it will connect to the rest of the series. Is it a direct sequel to the 2009 film? Or will it be rebooted and turned into a “found footage” scenario?
