Black Girls Rock! has found its fearless host, and it’s none other than Queen Latifah. The multi-hyphenate will be the ceremony’s MC on Aug. 26, which takes place in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey. The televised edition will premiere on Sept. 9 on BET.
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center will serve as the hub for a diverse guest list of black women that are dominating their fields of expertise. Queen Latifah was honored alongside Patti LaBelle and Venus Williams at the event’s 2013 edition, which also took place in Latifah’s old stomping grounds. At that time, the famed actress/musician said she was excited to receive that honor in the East Coast city.
“I’m happy it’s happening in Newark. I was born here, and I always try to come home, to let everyone know in Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Jersey City, that we can dream, and we can make those dreams reality,” she said.
On selecting Latifah as this year’s host, the organization’s CEO and founder/creator Beverly Bond said, “Queen Latifah is the epitome of black excellence, hip-hop royalty, and black girl magic! She has been a longtime supporter of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! and has been honored at both our televised and pre-televised shows. I’m so thrilled to welcome her back to the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! stage as host.” Last year’s host was Taraji P. Henson.
Black Girls Rock! airs Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. EST on BET.
