As more stories about R. Kelly‘s troubling behavior come to the surface, BuzzFeed is teaming up with Hulu to release a documentary about the singer’s history of alleged sexual abuse. According to Vanity Fair, the unnamed project is in conjunction with the rollout of TV productions from the outlet this year. The documentary will be based on Jim DeRogatis’ report on the singer’s alleged sexual cult.
DeRogatis’ story helped break another layer in R. Kelly’s long-lasting accusations of preying on minors and young women. The veteran journalist and rock critic has covered allegations around the singer for 17 years, starting with his piece with former Sun-Times legal affairs reporter Abdon M. Pallasch in 2002 about Kelly’s infamous sex tape with a 15-year-old girl.
BuzzFeed’s vice president of news and programming Shani Hilton didn’t speak on the specifics of the documentary, but explained the brand’s decision to venture into programming instead of quick digital video content. “It just seemed obvious that we should be more in the show space,” she said. “But we also really wanted to do things that felt premium and high-level, and not just social video.”
Other projects include Profile, a weekly series on Facebook’s Watch platform hosted by Audie Cornish, a live morning show airing on Twitter, a true-crime docu-series for Oxygen and a weekly Netflix docu-series that follows reporters from BuzzFeed.
