Actress Lupita Nyong’o has probably been fielding calls from all over Hollywood (well, actually her agent has), but rumor is that since she’s scored her Oscar she’s possibly up for a role in Star Wars: Episode VII.
As we already reported when we posted the rumor about Attack The Block star John Boyega being up for a role, Abrams is looking to make this sci-fi space opera “more diverse”.
Now, word on the web is that J.J. Abrams has met with the Best Supporting Actress winner for a potential leading female role in the flick. Nyongo’s name brings some more attention to a film that has already caused commotion with its rumors. In addition to Boyega, you have Breaking Bad‘s Jesse Plemons also up for a role; Girl‘s Adam Driver rumored to play the movie’s main villain, and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) has already begun filming her part in the space opera.
According to The Latino Review, whom broke the report, Nyong’o may play a Sith. For those who don’t know, are an ancient kratocratic organization in the Star Wars universe. They are the primary recurring antagonists and represent the “dark side” of the Force. If she is to be a Sith Lord, she could somehow be paired with Adam Driver’s character. Interestingly enough, Star Wars lore notes that there can only be two Sith, so while it may be these two actors, our hope is that Lupita gets a chance to showcase her action-fighting side, while Driver plays the political baddie.
Obviously, we’ll all have to wait to see how this plays out. The opposite thought, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is that Lupita Nyong’o could be up for a role as one of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s descendants, which they describe as “non-caucasian.” It would be really intriguing if these roles were one in the same with no separation.
With Abrams still looking to cast people through open auditions, Nyong’o is the only one who has recently won an Oscar, so adding her to the Star Wars universe could be a huge coup for the cast and an equally huge pay day for Lupita.
