In the early hours of March 13, 1964, bartender Kitty Genovese was stalked, raped and murdered by Winston Moseley in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens, New York. Her death would become a recurring topic of New York City when it was reported that 38 witnesses either saw or heard Genovese’s death cries from their windows and failed to intervene.
Instead of focusing on the circumstances that led to Genovese’s murder, the independent flick, 37, will focus on the everyday lives of three people who bared witness to the horrific crime. The film, which stars former Orange Is The New Black star Samira Wiley, premiered a trailer online yesterday (Aug. 15).

In the movie, Wiley portrays Joyce Smith, the matriarch who relocates to Kew Gardens with her husband and children in order to escape the race riots that pervaded Harlem in the 1960s. The film also stars Michael Potts, Adrian Martinez, and Maria Dizzia. 37 is set to be released in theaters on Oct. 7.
