Toto, we’re not in Jersey anymore! One Garden State girl is following in the footsteps of Stephanie Mills and Diana Ross by making her way to Harlem.
NBC casted their Dorothy Gale for a live television production of “The Wiz.” The Today Show announced this morning (Aug. 5) that Shanice Williams would be joining the cast as the lead role – making her on-screen debut this December.
The 18-year-old has a background in musical theater. But, an open casting call in June convinced her to “ease down the road” towards a television career. She made it to callbacks in July. Hundreds of actresses auditioned, but something about this Dorothy’s silver shoes shined in producers’ eyes. The role was hers.
Her casting comes a day after NBC announced comedian and David Alan Grier is set to play the Cowardly Lion. Other cast members of include Queen Latifah as the Wiz, Mary J. Blige as the Wicked Witch of the West, and original Broadway Dorothy, Stephanie Mills, as Auntie Em.
