Tracy Morgan took his rightful place as the host of the show that jumpstarted his career, Saturday Night Live. His appearance on the coveted sketch comedy show marked his first televised comedy work since the tragic accident that claimed the life of his friend James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, and left him with a traumatic brain injury. In his opening monologue, the beloved comedian made light of his injuries.
“People were wondering, could he speak? Does he have 100 percent mental capacity? But the truth is, I never did. I might actually be a few points higher now.”
Morgan’s return featured a host of all-star guests, including a reunion by his 30 Rock castmates Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer. In addition to the revival of the hit show, Margan also brought life back to a few of his well-known SNL characters, including Astronaut Jones and Woodrow. A highlight of the night would be the return of “Brian Fellow’s Safari Planet,” where the lipgloss-wearing phony zoologist met with a beaver and a camel.
The Saturday Night Live episode also included Morgan playing an estranged husband playing a game of Family Feud with his new family, against his old one. The comedian also joined Kenan Thompson for a bit titled, “Yo! Where Jackie Chan At Right Now?” But one other SNL alum quietly stole the show in the cold opening; Larry David also made his return, playing a hilarious rendition of Bernie Sanders during the Democratic debate.
