Usher might be returning to the studio to lay down new tracks to his reported album, but not before he takes his first bout on the silver screen.
The ATLien will step into the shoes of Sugar Ray Leonard for the forthcoming movie Hands of Stone which depicts the storied match-ups of boxers Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez) and Leonard.
On whether or not he hopes the award powers-that-be will pay attention to his onscreen performance, Usher said he’s going into this role with no high expectations, but taking it on as another milestone in his expansive career.
“I don’t know if this is the one that would win me an Oscar or not. I’m going into it offering my interpretation and my hard work and my dedication to be the best Sugar Ray ever,” he said in an interview with Men’s Health. “Or as good as the man can be. I’ve spoken to him, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live up to him. But I’ll try to be better than him.”
In terms of landing his first leading role in a major film, Usher said, “It seems like this is a real passion project. It’s a film that everybody is so invested in, and I have the good fortune of having the character I’m playing still around.”
