After spending years in front of the camera, rapper-turned-actor Ice-T takes a behind-the-scenes seat producing the documentary Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp. The film — an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival — examines the tumultuous life of legendary Chicago pimp Iceberg Slim. Slim passed away in 1992 at the age of 74, but he is known for reinventing himself from pimp into author. He penned seven books in his seven decades. Books that ventured into his former pimp-driven ghetto= and birthed the Street Lit/urban fiction genre for their gritty and poetic detail.
Directed by Jorge Hinojosa the film interviews not only its producer Ice-T, but also includes sit-downs with Snoop Dogg, Henry Rollins, Chris Rock and Quincy Jones. Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp is in theaters July 19 and video on demand on July 12.
