Another weekend, another search for ways to fill free time. If the approach of steady sunny skies hasn’t prompted you to spend every waking moment outside just yet, here are a few things to watch, listen to and do on your downtime. — Iyana Robertson
1. Going to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Spidey’s back for another round of web-slinging crime-fighting this weekend with the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. Jamie Foxx joins in on action as Electro, while Emma Watson plays Peter Parker’s pre-Mary Jane love interest, Gwen Stacy. Definitely worth a trip to the movies.
2. (Still) Watching the NBA Playoffs
This season’s NBA Playoffs has featured some of the most competitive matchups yet (minus that Miami sweep). This weekend’s schedule is all about “Go Hard or Go Home,” as all the remaining Round 1 teams will fight it out in Game 7s. It’s down-to-the-wire.
3. Checking out Belle
Racism ruled as the theme of this week’s biggest news story, and now the movie Belle reaffirms that the issue is longtime and widespread one. Set in the 18th century, the movie follows the rue story of biracial aristocrat Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay, and her plight in a racially tense England. A timely movie to see.
4. Heading to New Orleans’ JazzFest
It’s weekend two of JazzFest in New Orleans, and if you get a chance, don’t miss out. Last week boasted a performances by Robin Thicke and Public Enemy, while Trey Songz, Christina Aguilera and Chaka Khan are scheduled to hit the stage during this go-round. Not a bad way to fill a day if you’re in town.
5. Watching the Mayweather/Maidana fight
It is always a bad idea to miss a Floyd Mayweather fight. Not only will you get to watch him duke it out with Maidana to defend his undefeated record, he’s sure to entertain with his entrance. Find a fight party and get into it.
6. Replaying Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s “Love Never Felt So Good”
Some of our weekends consist of a good house cleaning, and MJ’s new track should definitely be the score to your duties. The dance-inducing track will break the monotony of any not-so-exciting task you have to get through, sock-slide across the floor included.
7. Download the LeBron app
While you’re waiting on LeBron James to get back to the court for Round 2 of the Playoffs, keep yourself busy with his brand-spankin’-new Samsung app . Featuring never-before-seen photos and videos of King James’ on and off court life, this is a good way to keep Heat fans from sitting too hard on their hands.
8. Playing catch-up on the i Heart Radio Awards
The first-ever i Heart Radio Music Awards went down this week, and running that back might be a good way to fill up an hour. Highlights included a performance by Kendrick Lamar, a teary-eyed acceptance speech from Pharrell, and Rihanna — in a very interesting ensemble — being crowned Artist of the Year. Why not?
9. Shop the Annual Goop Closet Sale
Although Beyonce’s custom-made Stuart Weitzman boots have sold out already, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Annual Goop Closet Sale features other celebrity donations, from the likes of other fashionistas like Nicole Richie, who have put up items for charity. If you can handle loosening your purse strings, online shopping is always a way to fend off boredom.
