
For Will Smith’s next role, the veteran actor will tell the story of Nicky “Mr. Untouchable” Barnes. According to Deadline, Smith signed on for the lead role in The Council and reunites with Peter Landesman, who worked with Smith on Concussion. Landesman is responsible for this forthcoming movie’s screenplay.
Barnes was known as one of Harlem’s most notorious drug lords of the ’70s and ’80s. Before he died from cancer in 2012, he was sentenced to life in prison in 1978 but later cooperated with federal law enforcement. After he became an informant, the government reversed his life sentence mandate and he was released in 1998.
“The Council” consisted of seven men that established a drug operation that moved substances like heroin throughout Harlem and beyond. No release date has been announced in the present time.
Recently, Smith re-teamed with is Bad Boys partner Martin Lawrence for a third film within the action franchise. The second installment was released 16 years ago.
