A 3-year-old girl shot her pregnant mother inside an Illinois parking lot Tuesday afternoon (April 18) after finding a loaded gun in car, according to reports. The bullet went through the car seat and struck the 21-year-old mother in the shoulder.
Some witnesses heard the gunshot, while others recall the woman’s screams and then saw her stumbling out of the car with blood “pouring out of her.” While speaking with WFQX-TV, a witness named Rebecca Todd said the woman immediately begged for assistance.
“She was just saying ‘Help, help,’ ” Todd said.
Another witness said the father was inside chain thrift store Plato’s Closet trying on clothes and dashed outside after seeing the commotion. “The little kid was standing next to her, not saying anything. Just out of breath,” Hadassah Zirkle, store employee said.
Law enforcement said the father placed the 9mm handgun in the middle console before going into the store to try on clothes. “It should have never happened. Should have been locked in the trunk and unloaded,” Merrillville police Chief Joe Petruch said.
The father, whose name is being withheld from the press, was taken into custody after the shooting which police think was an accident. He however is still being charged with endangerment.
