Police in Austin, Tx. have come under fire with the latest viral video of police brutality stemming from a jaywalking incident. A group of three people, Jeremy Kingg, Lou Glen, Matt Wallace, and Rolando Ramiro, were met with grave force after being stopped by officers and asked to show their IDs. Ramiro shared footage of what happened thereafter on Facebook, and the video is rather disturbing.
“We were walking across the street, the sign said ‘do not walk,’ but lights were already turning yellow and streets were blocked off, so we kept walking,” Ramiro recounted, according to Raw Story. “[Police] flashed their flashlights at us, asked us to show them our IDs. Matt and Jeremy said to f*** off.”
According to Ramiro, he and his friends crossed a blocked-off street to catch an Uber on Austin’s Sixth Street. The video shows two of the young men, both unarmed, being forcibly detained. One of them was punched and kneed before being taken to ground while exclaiming “I’m down! What did I do?” Another, was dragged into the street, where an officer placed his knee on his neck while he laid face-down on the ground. By the end of the video, nearly twelve officers are on the scene, NBC News observed.
The Austin Police Department issued a statement regarding the matter on its website, writing that the incident is being reviewed “to determine what led up to the events captured in the video.” No officers have been named, charged, or implicated.
“The Austin Police Department has been made aware of the incident that occurred Friday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of E. Sixth Street. As is standard protocol, the Chain of Command will review the Response to Resistance and the incident to determine what led up to the events captured in the video and whether the officer’s actions were in compliance with APD policy.”
