Hundreds of Baylor University students turned an act of hate into an outpouring of love, following a racist attack on a black student last week.
Natasha Nkhama was walking around campus a day after the presidential election (Nov. 9) when she was shoved by a white student.
“On my way to class, this guy went out of his way to bump into me and shove me off the sidewalk,” she explained in a video shared online. “He said ‘no n*ggers allowed on the sidewalk.'”
Nkhama was “shocked” by the student, who added that he wanted to “make America great again.”
After one of Nkhama’s friends shared the video on Twitter, nearly 300 Baylor students escorted her to class two days after the incident (professors even participated by allowing some students to leave early in order to attend).
The school also responded to the report in a statement slamming the student’s racist actions.
“Baylor Administration has been made aware of a student who was pushed and subjected to racially offensive language from another student while on campus,” the statement reads. “The behavior is deeply disturbing and does not in any way reflect Baylor’s faith or values. We wholeheartedly condemn the behavior…We have connected with the student and are working with her to ensure she feels safe and supported by the Baylor community.”
The Texas university is predominately white, with black students making up less than 10 percent of the population.
